Like‑Nu Concrete Restoration Mix restores faded, stained, weathered, and uneven concrete without covering it with a thick coating. It's spray-applied and penetrates the concrete, blending discoloration while keeping the surface's existing texture and elevation.

Great results come down to six things: proper cleaning, open concrete pores, accurate mixing, controlled spraying, the right penetration time, and careful roller blending. Follow the best practices below for an even, natural-looking, light-gray new-concrete finish.

Quick version: clean thoroughly → confirm water soaks in → spray two to three light coats → wait 30–120 seconds → roll in opposite directions with medium-nap rollers → let it dry to light gray before judging the color.

Part 1: Prepare the Concrete

1. Evaluate the Concrete Before Starting

Inspect the whole project area for anything that could interfere with penetration or cause inconsistent results:

  • Existing sealers or coatings
  • Oil, grease, tire dressing, or automotive fluids
  • Chemical stains or unknown contaminants
  • Curing compounds or concrete hardeners
  • Paint, adhesive, or construction residue
  • Efflorescence or mineral deposits
  • Loose, weak, or deteriorated concrete
  • Standing water or drainage problems
  • Previously repaired or replaced sections

Like‑Nu improves the appearance of structurally sound concrete. It isn't intended to correct concrete movement, unstable surfaces, severe deterioration, or active moisture problems. Complete all crack and surface repairs before you begin.

2. Clean the Surface Thoroughly

The concrete must be clean enough for Like‑Nu to get into its pores. Remove dirt, dust, algae, grease, loose material, and cleaning-product residue.

Pressure washing helps, but on its own it may not remove oil, silicone, sealer, or deeply embedded contaminants. Match the treatment to the problem:

  • Oil and automotive residue: concrete degreaser, such as our Oil Stain Remover
  • Rust and fertilizer stains: rust remover
  • Compatible film-forming sealers: sealer remover
  • Anything that won't come off chemically: mechanical sanding or grinding

Always follow the cleaner manufacturer's instructions, and rinse thoroughly so no soap, cleaner, or dissolved contamination remains. Remember: a surface can look clean and still contain an invisible substance that keeps Like‑Nu from penetrating.

3. Perform a Water Penetration Test

Once the concrete is clean and dry, test several locations with clean water:

  • Normal-looking concrete
  • Previously stained areas
  • Repaired sections
  • Shiny or unusually smooth areas
  • Spots where a coating or sealer previously failed

The water should darken the concrete and begin soaking in. If it beads or sits on top, a sealer, hardener, oil, silicone, or other contaminant may still be blocking the pores. Absorption should be reasonably consistent across the project.

Don't apply Like‑Nu to areas that stay water-repellent. Clean or mechanically prepare them and test again. (See our full guide: How to Perform a Water Penetration Test on Concrete.)

4. Let the Concrete Dry Completely

Concrete can hold moisture after pressure washing even when the surface looks dry. Applying Like‑Nu to damp concrete can interfere with penetration and cause an uneven look. Allow enough drying time after:

  • Rain
  • Pressure washing
  • Chemical cleaning
  • Morning dew
  • Irrigation overspray

Drying time depends on humidity, shade, concrete density, and airflow. Check joints, cracks, repairs, low spots, and shaded sections carefully — they often stay damp longer.

Part 2: Plan the Job

5. Use Hot Weather to Your Advantage

Unlike many conventional coatings, Like‑Nu performs very well in hot weather — often even better as temperatures rise. Warm conditions help light coats penetrate and dry quickly.

Because everything moves faster, stay organized:

  • Prepare and mask the entire area before mixing.
  • Divide large projects into manageable sections.
  • Keep a consistent spray pattern and a properly pressurized sprayer.
  • Have two to three clean rollers ready before spraying.
  • Avoid stopping in the middle of an open slab.
  • Bring enough people for larger projects.

Strong wind can affect the spray pattern and carry overspray. Don't apply during rain, on damp concrete, or where irrigation may reach the project. Your final sealer may have different weather limits than Like‑Nu, so follow its instructions separately.

6. Protect Adjacent Surfaces

Like‑Nu is made for concrete, so mask or cover anything else:

  • Garage doors, walls, and siding
  • Windows and painted surfaces
  • Pavers and stone
  • Drains and pool water
  • Landscaping
  • Vehicles and metal fixtures

Turn off sprinklers and move vehicles away. Wind can carry fine overspray farther than you'd expect, so keep clean water and towels handy to deal with accidental overspray right away.

7. Plan Your Start and Stop Points

Before mixing, decide where each section will begin and end. Use natural stopping points whenever possible:

  • Control and expansion joints
  • Edges and steps
  • Walkway intersections
  • Changes in concrete placement

Finishing full sections helps avoid visible start-and-stop lines. Break larger projects into areas that can be sprayed, allowed to penetrate, and rolled within the right time window.

Part 3: Mix and Set Up Your Equipment

8. Follow the Mixing Instructions Exactly

Mix the Like‑Nu components according to the kit instructions, using the specified amount of clean water and combining components in the correct order.

Don't alter the mix to make it darker, lighter, thicker, or stretch coverage. Changing the proportions can affect color, penetration, spray performance, bonding, coverage, and the finished look.

Mix thoroughly until uniform, and keep agitating as directed during application, since heavier particles can settle. Only mix what you can apply within the recommended working time.

9. Use a Clean Pump Sprayer

Use a clean garden-style pump sprayer in good condition. Leftover herbicide, pesticide, sealer, cleaner, or other chemicals can contaminate the mix. Before filling:

  1. Confirm the tank is clean.
  2. Check the hose and wand.
  3. Test the nozzle with clean water.
  4. Make sure the spray pattern is even.
  5. Verify the sprayer holds consistent pressure.

An uneven, partially blocked, or dripping nozzle can leave streaks, spots, and heavy droplets.

10. Have Two to Three Medium-Nap Rollers Ready

Before you spray, prepare two to three clean 9-inch medium-nap paint rollers. Multiple rollers let your team keep pace with the sprayer — especially in hot weather or on large projects.

Use rollers that have never been used with paint, sealer, solvent, or other chemicals, and make sure frames and extension poles are in good shape. The rollers blend the sprayed Like‑Nu after it penetrates and help correct:

  • Overspray and pooling
  • Heavy spray areas
  • Larger droplets when a sprayer "spits"
  • Uneven spray patterns
  • Material collecting around repairs
  • Visible transitions between repaired and original concrete

Part 4: Apply Like‑Nu

11. Start With a Small Test Application

Always test Like‑Nu in a small, inconspicuous spot before treating the full project. Include areas that differ in age, texture, color, porosity, previous treatment, and repair history.

The test confirms your surface prep, spray technique, penetration time, roller technique, color, and coverage. Let it dry completely before judging it — Like‑Nu sprays on very light, almost white, and darkens to its finished light-gray, new-concrete look as it penetrates and dries.

12. Apply Two to Three Light Coats

Like‑Nu works best in two to three light, controlled coats. Don't try to get the finished look with one heavy application.

Hold the wand at a consistent height, move at a steady pace, and slightly overlap each pass. The first coat should soak into the concrete, not build a layer on top. Let each coat dry as directed before the next.

Alternate directions between coats when practical:

  • Coat 1: north to south
  • Coat 2: east to west
  • Coat 3 (if needed): a light pass where the blend needs finishing

Cross-direction application reduces spray lines and creates a more consistent finish.

13. Let Like‑Nu Penetrate Before Rolling

After each light coat, give the material about 30 to 120 seconds to penetrate before rolling. Timing depends mainly on temperature and how fast the concrete is absorbing:

  • Hot weather: penetration is fast — start rolling closer to 30 seconds.
  • Cooler weather: allow more time, up to about 120 seconds.
  • Older, porous concrete: may absorb faster than dense or previously treated concrete.

The goal is to let Like‑Nu enter the concrete before the rollers blend what's left on the surface.

  • Rolling too soon moves wet material around instead of letting it soak in.
  • Rolling too late (once it's drying) can leave roller lines or an uneven finish.

Watch the surface and adjust your timing to the conditions.

14. Roll in Opposite Directions to Blend

After the penetration period, blend with your 9-inch medium-nap rollers, using the same cross-direction approach as spraying:

  1. Roll north to south.
  2. Then roll east to west.

Use light, even pressure. You're distributing and blending the remaining surface material — not building a rolled coating. Rolling evens out the spray pattern, blends overspray, spreads pooled material, fixes droplets from a spitting sprayer, removes heavy spots, and smooths transitions between passes.

With two to three rollers, the rolling can stay close behind the sprayer without rushing — especially important in hot weather.

15. Roll Like‑Nu Into Repairs

Repairs often have a different texture and porosity than the surrounding concrete, so spraying alone may leave a visible transition.

After the 30–120 second penetration period, roll the material into the repair in opposite directions to work it into the texture. Feather Like‑Nu past the repair edges into the surrounding concrete to soften the boundary.

Repairs may absorb differently and need an extra light coat — build the look gradually rather than with one heavy coat. Like‑Nu improves the visual consistency of repairs, but it won't remove physical differences in texture or elevation. (More on this: How to Match New Concrete to Old.)

16. Give Older, Porous Concrete an Extra Light Coat

Older, weathered, or highly porous concrete can absorb more Like‑Nu than newer, denser concrete. Early coats may soak in fast and look lighter or less uniform at first.

An additional light coat may be needed to reach an even light-gray finish. Build the color gradually — never compensate with one heavy coat. Different sections may absorb at different rates, so evaluate each coat after it dries and add a light coat only where needed.

17. Expect the Color to Change as It Dries

Like‑Nu looks different during application than after drying. It goes on light — sometimes almost white — then darkens as it penetrates and dries into its final light-gray, new-concrete color. This is normal.

Don't keep spraying an area because it looks too light while wet. Let the coat dry before deciding whether another light coat is needed. Correcting color too early leads to overapplication.

18. Avoid Heavy Application and Pooling

More material doesn't mean a better result. Heavy application can cause uneven color, dark spots, surface residue, inconsistent drying, poor penetration, visible spray or roller patterns, and material collecting in joints and low areas.

If Like‑Nu starts to pool, let it penetrate for the right amount of time, then roll it out evenly. Take extra care around cracks, control joints, edges, low spots, rough repairs, and highly porous areas.

The goal is controlled penetration through multiple light coats — not a thick surface coating.

19. Keep Sprayer Pressure and Technique Consistent

Pump sprayer pressure drops gradually as you work. When it gets too low, droplets get bigger and coverage gets less even. Repressurize as needed and keep your technique steady:

  • Same wand height
  • Same walking speed
  • Uniform overlap
  • No swinging the wand in a tight arc
  • No pausing over one spot
  • Clean nozzle
  • Eyes open for spitting or large droplets

Start and end each pass beyond the edge of the application area when possible to avoid heavy spots where the wand changes direction. If the sprayer spits, let the material penetrate for 30–120 seconds, then roll the area in opposite directions to blend it in.

Part 5: Protect and Seal

20. Keep Traffic Off the Surface

Keep people, pets, vehicles, landscapers, and irrigation off the surface during application and drying. Footprints, tire marks, water drops, leaves, and debris can all affect the finish.

Use cones, tape, or temporary barriers, and follow the product instructions for drying and return-to-service times before allowing foot or vehicle traffic.

21. Apply the Recommended Sealer Correctly

If your project includes Like‑Nu Sealer & Tire Guard or another approved penetrating sealer, let the Like‑Nu treatment dry or cure for the required time before sealing.

Apply the sealer at the recommended coverage rate. Too little may not protect against stains and tire marks; too much can cause an uneven look, residue, or unwanted sheen. Before sealing:

  • Confirm the Like‑Nu surface is dry.
  • Remove dust and debris.
  • Review the sealer's weather requirements.
  • Protect adjacent surfaces.
  • Test the sealer in a small area.
  • Follow the specified application and coverage instructions.

Don't substitute an unknown sealer without confirming compatibility first.

Common Application Mistakes to Avoid

Prep mistakes

  • Applying over an existing sealer or curing compound
  • Skipping the water penetration test
  • Applying to damp concrete
  • Leaving cleaner or chemical residue behind
  • Using a contaminated sprayer
  • Changing the mixing proportions

Spraying and rolling mistakes

  • Applying one heavy coat instead of two to three light coats
  • Not having two to three rollers ready before spraying
  • Rolling immediately without letting Like‑Nu penetrate
  • Waiting until Like‑Nu has dried before rolling
  • Leaving sprayer droplets, overspray, or pooled material unblended
  • Using too much roller pressure
  • Repeatedly rolling material that has started to dry
  • Not rolling Like‑Nu into repaired areas

Finishing mistakes

  • Judging the color while it still looks light or almost white
  • Spraying more material before evaluating the dried color
  • Skipping an extra light coat on older, porous concrete when it's needed
  • Sealing before the Like‑Nu application is ready
  • Applying sealer below its recommended coverage rate

The Key to a Successful Like‑Nu Application

  1. Clean the concrete thoroughly.
  2. Confirm water penetrates consistently.
  3. Apply two to three light, even coats.
  4. Let each coat penetrate 30 to 120 seconds, depending on temperature.
  5. Blend with two to three 9-inch medium-nap rollers in opposite directions.
  6. Roll Like‑Nu into repairs to soften the transition.
  7. Add an extra light coat on older, porous concrete when needed.
  8. Let the nearly white application darken to light gray before judging it.

Like‑Nu restores concrete by penetrating and blending with the existing surface rather than covering it with a thick coating. Careful prep, multiple light coats, proper penetration time, and cross-direction roller blending keep the concrete's natural texture while giving you a cleaner, more uniform, new-concrete look.
